Concrete scanning requires clear access to the concrete surface that needs to be investigated, along with information about the planned drilling, cutting, coring, or construction work. Providing available construction drawings, structural plans, as-built documents, and previous inspection records can help technicians understand the structure and identify areas that require detailed scanning.

Before scanning begins, the work area should be reasonably clear of equipment, materials, debris, vehicles, and other obstructions that could prevent proper access to the concrete surface. Technicians may use Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and specialized concrete scanning equipment to identify embedded features such as rebar, post-tension cables, conduits, pipes, and other objects. The required scanning method can vary depending on concrete thickness, reinforcement, surface conditions, and project requirements.
